My First Abstraction

"Are sunsets and landscapes cliche?" asked Kim Vanderhoek on instagram. She's made her career painting them, so her answer lands squarely in the NO category.

I wondered. Am I bored with the vivid sunsets and pastoral landscapes I scroll through each day? Do my daily walks at the slough and Vettuchio bring a sense of ennui? No.

But is my depiction of the landscapes and light I love dull? Perhaps.

This morning at the slough, I found the reflection of the sky so much more interesting than the sky itself. The way the water distorted the clouds intrigued me.

So, I focused on abstracting this morning's walk into patterns and movement with this painting.
